The Blue Lagoon in the lava fields.
The Blue Lagoon in the lava fields.

Our last night camping in Iceland, we camped in Vogar, close to the car hire place and Keflavik airport for an easy transition the next day. Our biggest drive of the trip but again we had some 'WOW' moments, like driving through another 6km tunnel under the ocean. But undoubtedly the best was driving through the fresh lava fields. The Fagradalsfjall volcano had laid dormant for over 800 years until 2021 when it erupted. It's most recent eruption was this year, for 2 months. We unexpectedly encountered new lava flow, it had cut off the road, a new diversion road has been constructed. The surrounding area was obviously fresh lava flow, it was very black, and it was still steaming with warning signs advising not to walk on the lava. Amazing.

Then we found the Blue Lagoon, another amazing sight with sky blue steaming water pools located in black lava surrounds. Again we had coffee and people watched as those who paid $125 per head to swim and have a face mask. Overrated and surely not that hygienic.

2025 lava flow encroaching the road, still steaming.
